Title: Biomechanics and Material Characteristics of Shape Memory Aligners: Clinical Implications

Abstract

Application of predictable force system is an integral part of orthodontic tooth movement. Numerous evidence based studies have reported that thermoformed aligners have variable efficacy related to various tooth movements. Thermoformed aligners deliver higher force and lack the ability to deliver high moment to force ratio needed for torque and uprighting of posterior teeth. This presentation will discuss differences between force driven and shape driven tooth movement and how material properties of shape memory aligners can help achieve predictable results.
